The theme for the Royal Australian Mint’s mintmark coins in 2023 is ‘Creatures of the Deep’. The coins depict the CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator and deep tow camera exploring the deep ocean. The obverse depicts the special memorial obverse for Queen Elizabeth II, the first coin set from the Royal Australian Mint to use this design.
This set contains uncirculated aluminium bronze ‘C’ Mintmark and ‘S’,’M’, and ‘B’ privy mark one dollar coins in a hard perspex case with outer protective box. The outer box depicts the the Tripodfish (Bathypterois Grallator) or spiderfish. These strange fish prop themselves from the deep floor on their stilt-like fins and filter food from the ocean current with their gills. They are hermaphrodites having both male and female sexual organs and do not require a mate to reproduce.
