1960’s penny struck on an underweight planchet. Probably due to a cold shut being rolled into the metal during the blank manufacturing process. The cold shut detached at some point leaving the blank missing a significant amount of material on the obverse. Note the strike weakness on the reverse opposite the missing metal on the obverse. A very sharp transition from correct flan thickness to thinner area across most of the obverse diameter. Probably one of the nicest errors of this type that we’ve seen.
