The Great Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world. This spectacular underwater ecosystem stretches more than 2000 kilometres and includes over 900 islands. As beautiful as it is diverse, it is home to some 1500 species of fish, 215 species of bird, as well as sea turtles, dolphins and whales. Its history spans twenty million years, with generations of living coral growing on top of its predecessors.
For many years, the reef has fascinated scientists, photographers, environmentalists and tourists. Every year, about two million visitors from around Australia and the world travel to the region to experience the tranquillity and natural splendour that it offers. The Great Barrier Reef is registered as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Official release in partnership with UNESCO.
