An interesting 61 gram sterling silver medal issued in 1885. Celebrates the centenary of the Times Newspaper. One side depicts portraits of three generations of John Walters, the elder (1738-1812), his son (1776-1847), and his grandson (1818-1894). The eldest John Walter founded The Times Newspaper in 1785 as “The Daily Universal Register”, which adopted the famous name “The Times” in 1788. Bearwood (shown on the medal) was the name of the family home in Berkshire, England which was built by the youngest John Walter at a cost (in today’s money) of over $30 million dollars!
The medal is 44mm in diameter and comes in the original box as issued by the maker Strongi’th’arm, seal engraver to Queen Victoria. Handsome toning and proof-like mirror fields.
