Amazing error on a 1971 New Zealand 50 cent, a huge coin and easily in the top 10 most spectacular coin errors we’ve seen. The coin has been struck twice.
The first strike was against an already struck coin, resulting in the partial brockage you can see in the upper third of the reverse, if you look closely you can see the mirror image of the letters ‘ZEAL’. This indicates that the coin it was struck against had FLIPPED before it was struck against this one. Additionally this error failed to engage with the collar die properly resulting in a partial collar / railroad rim. Not surprising given there was another huge 50 cent in the way of the reverse die to stop it engaging properly with the collar die!
The second time this coin was struck it had almost exited the dies, but not quite. This second strike is apparent at the top of the reverse where you can see the letters ‘ENDEAVO’. The region opposite on the obverse is smooth indicating the coin was struck against a blank that had entered the dies. Note also the reeding malformed on the obverse. This reeding was raised after the first strike (typical of an indented strike) and then malformed by the second strike against the blank.
A wonderful error that would look great in any collection.
